This excursion highlights the management of Velký Lél Island (Great Lel Inner Island), one of the Danube’s largest islands, offering key ecological benefits. Proper management helps maintain habitats for birds and other species in this dynamic river environment.

The Velký Lél project focuses on restoring a vital Danube branch and improving the region’s wetlands through measures like extensive grazing, mowing, head willow management, and the restoration of floodplain forests.

During the excursion, participants will learned about the measures to improve the water regime of the wetlands, the largest Danube branch and island, and examples of Danube landscape management, including: extensive grazing, mowing, management of head willows, restoration of the natural composition of floodplain forests.

The day provided valuable insights into sustainable management practices in the Danube landscape and the importance of wetland protection and restoration. Boat rides will offer a closer look at the area.

The overall aim of the Velký Lél project is to create a sustainable, balanced landscape that benefits both the environment and local communities. It serves as an example of how landscape management can contribute to the restoration of natural river and wetland ecosystems while addressing issues such as biodiversity loss, flooding, and water quality.

On the way back, there will be an interpretation of the Gabčíkovo Dam and a short walk at Kráľovská Lúka (Royal Meadow), a wetland receiving improvements as part of the LIFE programme.

This excursion is supported by BROZ (Bratislava Regional Conservation Association), an NGO focused on environmental protection and sustainable land management.
